Innovations in Aesthetic Dermatology: Trends in Clinical Research

Aesthetic dermatology is gaining significant popularity in today’s world, which caters to people’s desire to achieve their ideal skin appearance. The traditional dermatology mainly focused on treating diseased skin, however, the spotlight is now shifting toward enhancing skin aesthetics in line with individual expectations. Globally, clinical research in aesthetic dermatology is expanding, with a distinctive focus on skin of colour and providing a standardised treatment for a specific condition. A recent trend in clinical research in aesthetic dermatology is as follows:

1. Energy-Based Devices for Pigmentation- Picosecond, Q-switched Nd:YAG, and fractional 675 nm lasers are being evaluated in conditions like melasma and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in darker skin to standardize the treatment parameters and minimize complications while achieving impressive results.

2. Safe and Effective Chemical Peels- Mandelic acid, azelaic acid, and phytic acid are becoming popular for acne, pigmentation, and skin rejuvenation in melanin-rich skin, with a focus on safety and quick recovery.

3. Injectable and Filler Innovations- Using injectables such as hyaluronic acid fillers, poly-L-lactic acid, and calcium hydroxylapatite to increase volume, reduce wrinkles, and smooth the skin on the face. Research helps to understand the dosing, anatomical differences, and long-term safety in skin of colour.

4. Radiofrequency Microneedling for Texture and Scars- Used in the treatment of acne scars and skin laxity. Clinical studies confirm its suitability for darker skin, showing lower rates of PIH and quicker recovery compared to more aggressive resurfacing options

5. Regenerative Therapies: PRP, Exosomes, Stem Cells- PRP, exosome therapy, and stem cell-derived products for hair loss (alopecia) and skin aging, provides natural outcomes with minimal risk.

Conclusion

Clinical research and trials in aesthetic dermatology paves the way to treat the conditions in skin of color and more research validates the treatment safety and effectiveness.
